This is considered to be a sister center to Machu Picchu and was mapped and investigated by Hiram Bingam in 1909, two years before he found the latter.  It has recently been renovated by the Peruvian government and is becoming an adventure travel destination.

  • Cloud forests surround remote Choquequirau, an ancient Inca royal center in Peru's Cordillera Vilcabamba, not far from Machu Picchu.  This was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1909, two years before Bingham found the latter.  Only recently has it begun to be restored or visited.
