Mountaineer Mark Newcomb ascends treacherous conglomerate rock on Shipton’s Arch in the arid Kara Tagh Mountains next to the Taklimakan Desert near Kashagar (Kashi) in Xinjiang Province, China. Later the team crossed the range, descending into the dangerous and previously unknown slot canyon behind him.
