Mountaineer Mark Newcomb climbs treacherous conglomerate rock on Shipton’s Arch in the arid Kara Tagh Mountains next to the hazy Taklimakan Desert near Kashagar (Kashi) in Xinjiang Province, China. Later the expedition crossed the range by descending the dangerous and unexplored slot canyon below him.
