  • Ski Mountaineers Jay Jensen and Allan Pietrasanta saw a ski in half with a Swiss Army knife after its mate was buried in an avalanche that catapulted them down the cliffs behind.  Photographer Gordon Wiltsie did not yet know that he had crushed two vertebrae, but everyone knew he was seriously injured.  He was given the only remaining pair of skis in order to facilitate a self-rescue.  (This was near the end of the first-ever winter traverse across India's Great Himalaya Range from Ladakh to Kashmir.)
