  • King penguins are the second largest species in the world.  Like all penguins, they can't fly but in In the water they are fast and agile swimmers. They are clumsier on land,  where they alternate between wobbly walking and tobogganing—sliding over the ice on their bellies belly, propelled by their feet and wing-like flippers.

  • Young King Penguins called "Oakum Boys" encircle a resting Elephant Seal at a rookery  on South Georgia Island, Antarctica. King chicks are very curious and will wander far when exploring their surroundings. They often gather in a group called a crèche and are watched over by only a few adults; most parents leave their chicks in these crèches to forage for themselves and their offspring.

  • A King Penguin chick huddles by its parent amidst a huge rookery at Salisbury Plain, South Georgia, Antarctica.  Very young chicks are balanced on its parents' feet, sheltered from the cold.  During this time, the parents alternate every 3–7 days, one guarding the chick while the other forages for food. The guard phase lasts for about a month until they have grown much larger and are better able to both keep warm and protect themselves against skua gulls and other predators.
