  • A King Penguin chick huddles by its parent amidst a huge rookery at Salisbury Plain, South Georgia, Antarctica. Very young chicks are balanced on its parents' feet, sheltered from the cold. During this time, the parents alternate every 3–7 days, one guarding the chick while the other forages for food. The guard phase lasts for about a month until they have grown much larger and are better able to both keep warm and protect themselves against skua gulls and other predators.
