  • King penguins breed on subantarctic islands between 45 and 55°S, at the northern reaches of Antarctica, as well as Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, and other temperate islands of the region. Their total population is estimated to be more than 2 million pairs and is increasing. Here, more than 100,000 of them nest in at Salisbury Plain on South Georgia Island in Antarctica. • Young King Penguins called "Oakum Boys" encircle a resting Elephant Seal at a rookery on South Georgia Island, Antarctica. King chicks are very curious and will wander far when exploring their surroundings. They often gather in a group called a crèche and are watched over by only a few adults; most parents leave their chicks in these crèches to forage for themselves and their offspring.
